Nestled in Karnataka, the vibrant town of Channapatna is affectionately known across India as Gombegala Ooru—literally, "Toy Town."

The legacy of these iconic toys began over two centuries ago in the 18th century, under the visionary rule of Tipu Sultan, the Maharaja of Mysore. Captivated by the beauty of Persian art, Tipu Sultan invited master craftspersons from Persia to train local artisans in the delicate art of lacquerware and woodturning. Today’s artisans still honor these centuries-old techniques, blending ancient Persian methods with traditional Indian artistry.

 

The Craftsmanship: Eco-Friendly, Lathe-Turned Perfection

What makes Channapatna toys globally celebrated is their rigorous, 100% organic, and sustainable manufacturing process:

• The Sacred Ivory Wood: The toys are carved exclusively from the wood of the Wrightia Tinctoria tree, locally known as Aale Mara (Ivory Wood). This wood is chosen because it is soft, lightweight, close-grained, and naturally pristine white. The raw wood is seasoned naturally for at least three months to ensure it never cracks.

• The Magic of the Lathe: The seasoned wood is mounted on a traditional lathe machine. Using precise hand chisels, master artisans sculpt the spinning wood into perfectly smooth spherical, circular, or cylindrical shapes.

• Vibrant, Nontoxic Colors: This is the most remarkable feature of Channapatna art. No chemical paints are ever used. Instead, artisans use natural Lac (a resin secreted by tiny insects) mixed with organic ingredients like turmeric for yellow, kumkum/indigo for red and blue, and spinach for green.

• The Palm Leaf Polish: While the toy spins rapidly on the lathe, the artisan presses the colored lacquer stick against it, using the friction heat to melt and spread the color. Finally, a piece of dried screw-pine palm leaf is pressed against the toy. The natural oils in the leaf fuse with the lacquer, creating a glassy, shimmering polish that never fades.
